“And he said, ‘Behold, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will do marvels, such as have not been created in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the Lord, for it is an awesome thing that I will do with you.’” Exodus 34:10, ESV
3. Through the work of God’s Word. The Bible is unique among all books with its God-inspired authorship. No other book will convict and restore our hearts as much as the words written within these sacred pages.
How does Scripture renew our hearts? By infusing our hearts with the thoughts and messages of God. That’s why memorizing verses is so essential to our spiritual wellbeing. We need to lock these truths deep into our hearts.
William Cowper wrote his classic hymn, “There Is a Fountain Filled with Blood,” in 1771 after his first major bout of depression. It’s based on Zechariah 13:1, which talked about the fountain being opened for the house of David to cleanse them and all of Jerusalem of sin. The hymn meditates on the saving grace of Christ’s blood.
There is a fountain filled with blood, drawn from Immanuel’s veins;
And sinners, plunged beneath that flood, lose all their guilty stains.
The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day;
And there have I, as vile as he, washed all my sins away.
E’er since by faith I saw the stream your flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die.
Then in a nobler, sweeter song I’ll sing your pow’r to save,
When this poor lisping, stamm’ring tongue lies silent in the grave.
Dear dying lamb, your precious blood shall never lose its pow’r,
Till all the ransomed church of God be saved to sin no more.
Next week, we’ll dive into what Christ promised about this renewal of our hearts.
